Redding Mountain Bike Club
Beginner Mountain Bike Training Class
April 2010
For the past few years Redding Mountain Bike Club has been conducting a beginner mountain bike riding training
class. The goal of the class was multi purpose. Some of the goals included:
Education
a. Trail Rules
b. Trail Co-operation with other users.
c. Trail Advocacy
d. Trail Safety
Mountain Bike Riding Dynamics
Analyzing Trail Conditions – How to ride.
Equipment & Maintenance
Fun & Exercise
The experience of mountain bike riding, in the real sense, creates a sense of awakening for many riding
enthusiasts. This awakening is created by the exhilaration of exploring the various trail systems in the Redding
area, communing with warm spirited wonderful people in a common learning experience, and enjoying a clean
healthy, robust experience in our great outdoors. Many feel renewed in their spirit as we explore the wonders and
beauty of our stunning Redding area from a very different view, in the saddle of a mountain bike.
Redding Mountain bikers are looking forward to the 2010 training class and once again expect to have more of
these positive, remarkable fun times as in years past. The class will be scheduled around the month of April. Exact
details will be announced in early April. April is an especially good time to do the class with the coming of longer
days, warming temps, and a yearning to get out of the house after the termination of the winter season.
Beginning mountain bike riders need not have any anxiety about their abilities. The class is designed to come
within reach of the true beginner. There are a couple of prerequisites though that one needs to be aware of in order
to get the maximum instruction from the class:
You need to be able to ride a bike.
You will need a mountain bike.
a. The training class begins and ends on true dirt trails.
b. Your everyday asphalt river trail cruiser bike will not work on mountain bike terrain.
c. The dynamic platform of the mountain bike is unique and setup to handle true mountain trail conditions.
d. The riding techniques require the structure of a mountain bike.
i. Trying to learn the classes riding techniques without a mountain bike will hamper your ability to grasp the
techniques provided.
You should have some degree of aerobic ability.
e. The training rides can encompass up to 3-6 miles during one instructional day.
f. No one is left behind. The class has experienced riders sweeping the group so no one gets lost or left behind
without help.
g. Now is the time to start developing some aerobic conditioning.
i. Ride the river trail or walk it but please do develop some aerobic conditioning. One does NOT have to be an
athlete. The class will keep the tempo slow as we build upon the instructional phases of the training.
You will need the proper safety equipment.
h. Helmet
i. Gloves
j. Water
The clinical training is usually focused on a four week period with two training classes per week giving you a total
of eight instructional time periods. The training days we are looking at are Tuesday and Friday and usually begin at
6PM. The classes build upon each other and one set of instructions leads to the next empowering you with new
riding knowledge. The skill learned at each class should give you a well rounded set of techniques that if practiced
should enable you to negotiate a majority of trail conditions.
What type of person has taken the class? A lot! We have had all varieties of sizes, shapes, and ages of people who
have taken the class. In the 2009 class we had ages varying from a 12 year old girl to a retired senior and most all
ages in between. Age is NO restriction. We find that most people bring a positive motivated attitude and coupling
that with an exciting fun activity as mountain biking we evolve the activity into a healthy mental and physical state
that draws us continuously back to the single tracks with our mountain bikes.
Times, dates, costs (free to members!) and contact information will be coming out in April.
